Biography
David Williams
Artist • Designer
An ardent naturalist, wildlife artist and designer, David Williams renders
work that captures the living essence of the subject matter he portrays.
He achieves a skillfully controlled blend of beauty, meticulous accuracy
and educational value.
Born 1965 in the rural town of Lexington, North Carolina, David began
expressing himself through artistic means at an early age. He began his
formal training in high school and went on to receive a Bachelor of Fine
Arts from Western Carolina University in 1988. University life offered
the opportunity to pursue his artistic training while indulging in as
many biological science courses as the schedule would allow.
Because of his love for science and nature, he has pursued a career that
would keep him near his interests. As a professional designer, he has
worked for various zoos, aquariums and museums and nature centers throughout
the Southeast for nearly twenty years. In addition to his full-time positions,
he has taught drawing/painting courses for all ages and college level
graphic design. He has won several awards in graphic design and achieved
a national ASHE Award for murals in a local Children’s Emergency
hospital.
In 1996, David established his own company called ”Wingin’
It Works,” combining two and three dimensional design. With a strong
appreciation for the natural world, he decided to put that enthusiasm
to work through full time graphic/exhibit design, mural painting, and
scientific illustration.
In his free time, David loves to get outside. He enjoys camping, hiking,
kayaking, beachcombing, surfing and organic gardening. An avid angler,
he fishes fresh and salt water with equal enthusiasm. He has backpacked
and journaled through Belize, Costa Rica and central France. For over
fifteen years, David has participated in a museum sponsored naturalist
weekend in the NC mountains where he has taught outdoor classes such as
field sketching, wild edibles, fly tying and nature journaling.
His work can be seen at many prestigious museums, science centers and
other facilities. Some of those include : Carolina Raptor Center (Charlotte,
NC), Caw Caw Interpretive Center (Charleston,SC), Discovery Place (Charlotte,
NC), Falls Lake Visitor Center (Raleigh, NC), Green Cay Nature Center
